Preface to seventh edition

It is now nine years since I sat down together with two friends to plan this Song Book. I had been collecting songs for many years, selecting those which contribute to our joy together, which touch our soul and open our ears for the sounds of the world. And now I wanted the book to have a beautiful graphic design – a layout which reflected the aspects I consider important: caring for the small details and a love of big ideas. Now the book has reached its 7th edition – I’m overjoyed at the resonance it has received!

Through my seminars and via the ZEGG community where I live, this book has found its way into schools and kindergartens, women’s groups, church congregations, environmental groups and circles of friends. They have all rediscovered the joy of singing together. I would like to encourage everyone to sing together more as part of their everyday life – with their children, their friends and their colleagues. Experience shows that songs have a power and the magic needed to bring people together in a new way. The songs I selected are musically fairly simple and generally do not have too many lyrics, so they can easily be learnt and sung by heart. Repeating the songs (in a similar way to chants) can help to calm our mind. Additionally, this provides newcomers and inexperienced singers the time to tune in and sing along.

In the meantime there is now a second volume of the Song Book. Both volumes have companion CDs to sing along to, which are particularly useful for those who prefer to learn their songs by ear. My work is linked to my hope that the healing and moving power of these songs will reach as many people as possible and help them to open their heart:

“Wenn einer aus seiner Seele singt, heilt er zugleich seine innere Welt. Wenn viele aus ihrer Seele singen und eins sind in der Musik, heilen sie zugleich auch die äußere Welt.“
