Song Book II. Preface

Singing has been a way to bring people together in cultures throughout the world and throughout time. People sing to celebrate the seasons, harvests and other social or individual events. And singing has always been used to express our feelings and even to heal them. Our souls need songs to remain healthy.

However, singing seems to have almost disappeared from everyday life in our modern Western European cultures. Perhaps the natural social framework for communal singing fell apart as the Industrial Revolution destroyed the communities offered by villages and extended families living together. And, in Germany, the abuse of traditional culture during the National Socialist era led to distortions in our way of relating to German songs and even the act of singing itself. Nonetheless, a range of media ensure that music pervades our life and can be accessed anywhere and anytime, so why don’t we sing ourselves? It’s a basic human need, after all! More and more people are (re-)discovering and cultivating the power of singing together. And I’m very happy I could make my own contribution to this movement with my Song Book Volume 1, which has found its way into the hands of an astonishing number of admirers.

So now I’m fulfilling my promise at last and publishing the 2nd volume: I’ve been collecting songs for the last seven years which people enjoy singing (again) and which express our quest for hope and an alternative to the consumerist and soulless world we often find ourselves in. I let my heart guide me when it came to compiling the songs, which resulted in a great diversity: ‘world music’, sounds from Africa, New Zealand and the Balkans, new German songs and English-language chants. One focal theme is our search for meaning and connection with Creation. This is mainly expressed in the second half of the book through spiritual songs from the Christian, Jewish, Sufi, Hindu and Buddhist traditions. After all, the divine may have diverse manifestations but it is also One.

As with the first volume, the musical notation and lyrics are supplemented with illustrations. And there are poems and texts to broaden our mind and cheer our heart, whether read for ourselves or read aloud.

Enjoy your rediscovery of singing’s heart power !!
